Crossfit Portland (Oregon)

by Mike on June 8, 2011

I didn’t know anyone or hear of anything about the CF affiliates in the surrounding Portland Area.  I based my visit to Crossfit Portland solely on its proximity to my hotel.  When I say Portland, it’s Portland, Oregon not to be confused with Portland, Maine.

The location of this box is conveniently located off a bus route and since Portland, Oregon is touted as one of the most green friendly cities in the U.S. with it’s comprehensive bus routes, light rail network, and bike lanes, why not take advantage of the one alternative forms of transportation the city has to offer.

The bus route took about 15 minutes from the Courtyard Marriot to the street where box is located.  From there, it’s about 5 minute walk to the front door.

I attended the 4:30 PM class on a Friday Afternoon, led by Sean.  Apparently, the weather in Portland has been cloudy and rainy for the past few weeks with occasional breaks in the clouds, Sean decided to run the warm up outside with the weather being so pleasant that afternoon.

I don’t know whether its was because I was a visitor from out of town or there were many unfamiliar faces amongst the afternoon session, before warming up, Sean went around and played the name game to allow everyone to introduce themselves, which is a pretty cool and welcoming gesture.

The WOD for that day was the “Bar Complex.”  The movement involved:

  • Power Clean
  • Thrusters
  • Snatch
  • Overhead Squat
  • Snatch Balance

Followed up by:

  • Pull-up exercises
  • Cool Down Stretches

CF Portland is probably one of the better equipped gyms I’ve been to.   Upon entering the industrial sized complex through it’s massive truck sized garage door, the locker rooms and bathrooms are situated on the left hand side, the pull-up bars are staged on the right hand side.  Four ropes hang from four separate “I beams” to land right in the middle of the box(ropes are pulled to the side when it’s not in use).  The rings are hung from horizontal bars connected to the pull-ups bars.   It’s a pretty sweet setup.

With bike lanes and relatively flat grounds, a good number of athletes ride their bicycles to the box, which is unique about this CF box.  If you’re in town visiting, rent a bicycle from Pedal Portland Bike Tour(located within walking distance from the Courtyard Marriot) and ride over to the Crossfit Portland to hit a WOD.  Afterwards, ride along city’s expansive networks of bike lanes to tour the city.

Hi Mike! Thanks for visiting our gym! I’m glad you like the Name Game (we actually do that every class). If you are ever back in Portland, come back and visit again as we have added a lot! (kitchen, hang out area, deck in the loading bay with ramp, offices upstairs and more Crossfit toys for your enjoyment!)
Thanks for the great review!
Hope to see you soon!
