I had to complete the 14.5 WOD and submit a score before Tuesday morning local time. Realistically, this means Monday evening due to the time zone difference. Since I was in Busan, South Korea for the weekend, the only place known to me was Crossfit Sentinel Beachside.
However, the best time to get judged was on Saturday, but I was taking the train to Busan on Saturday the timing didn’t quite work out.
Not knowing what my schedule would be like, I told the affiliate I would call them back on Sunday to schedule a time on Monday. I was able to get a hold of the Manager, Won and told me to arrive 10 am on Monday morning.
Jun-Mo Yang greeted me on Monday who was running a 10 am class and was unaware that I needed to be judged. With a yoga class following right behind the 10 am class, there wasn’t a lot of time. So Jun-Mo told me to get warmed up and ready to go because I would go immediately after the 10am class.
I was very grateful that Jun-Mo was able to squeeze me in before the 11 am yoga class.
I finished the 14.5 open WOD, which consisted of:
- 95-lbs thrusters
- bar facing burpees
I was able to get through the 16 reps of the 21 reps unbroken. I struggled with the 15 and 12 reps of thrusters, only competing 2 or 3 at a time. The burpees between the thrusters gave me no time for a breather.
I finished with a time of 21:16 and submitted the score to finalize my participation in the 2014 Open Games. It was a little bit of a headache trying to contact affiliates to set up a time to be judged. In general, e-mails tend to be slow. Finding the actual affiliate can be cumbersome.
It was also beneficial that I had on lookers from the 10am class cheering me on, which is something I won’t always get being the away team.
This box is much smaller than any of the Sentinel affiliates. The WOD area is smaller and the locker rooms and showers are much smaller. If I understood correctly, they limit their class sizes to 10 people, which makes sense given the size.
I had a bit of a difficult time finding this place. I initially found the back door via a side street. However, this is NOT where you want to enter.
You want to walk towards the road that runs along the beach and find this entrance.
From there, walk down stairs and you’ll appear at the front desk of the box.
