I couldn’t find any availability with miles for flights on Qantas so I ended up buying a paid way for $135 USD one-way in economy class.
At the airport, I checked myself in with no checked baggage because I didn’t want a counter agent questioning the weight of my shoulder bag, which was indeed over the 7kg carry on limit.
I cleared security and found a seat near my gate. The Melbourne airport has free wifi available so I made use of that while waiting.
Boarding time came and I boarded the plane without any incident despite my carry-on being over the allowable weight.
FLIGHT
The seat was a standard economy class seat. Nothing special. Definitely bearable for the short hour long flight.
There was offering of complimentary juice or water. There were paid beverages available.
Complimentary inflight wifi was available, but my device was apparently not setup for it.
However, I was still able to view the flight progress to Hobart, Australia.
The airport in Hobart lacks any jet bridges. This delays the time to deplane because passengers need to carry their luggage down the stairs, which is perhaps the reason the airline imposes a 7kg weight limit for carry-on luggage.
